Guide to Suits vs. Tuxedos-Tip and Trends
Many people do not know the difference between suits and tuxedos, so we have put together this blog post to explain the details. Suits are typically worn for work or less-formal events such as business meetings and attending weddings. Tuxedos are worn for more formal events such as if you’re in a wedding party, attending a school dance like prom, a charity event, or a black-tie affair.
However, dressing up for your wedding is really about the preference of you and your soon-to-be-wife. Some prefer tuxedos for a more elegant look and some prefer a suit for a more casual look. Two major considerations for choosing a suit vs. a tuxedo are the wedding gown and the venue. If the bride is wearing a gown, typically a tuxedo is the right choice; if the bride is wearing a more casual dress, then a suit will likely match her better. Just remember, you never want the wedding guests to be more dressed up than the groom!

1. Lapel and details- One of the most noticeable differences between a suit and a tuxedo is the satin on the lapel of the jacket. Typically, the lapel of a suit will match the same fabric as the jacket and the tuxedo will have a satin lapel. Tuxedos also have satin buttons and details (like on pockets) whereas suits will have bone, plastic or flat fabric covered buttons and details. Both suits and tuxedos can have double side vents or a single center vent.
2. Pants- Suit pants will also have the same fabric as the jacket. To match the satin lapel, the tuxedo pant leg usually has a strip of satin. According to GQ, “The classic tuxedo trouser features a single stripe over the side seam of the trousers, which is why it was put there in the first place—for seamlessness. This stripe is a detail you’ll notice on many military uniforms, such as the marines’ dress blues, a timeless costume that is still that service’s best recruiter.”
3. Accessories- Ties are worn with a suit for a more conservative look. Bow ties are worn with a tuxedo for a more formal look. However, ties and bow ties are interchangeable between a suit and tuxedo to go with your preference!
4. Shoes- Shoes that go along with suits are loafers, oxfords, or slip on’s, whereas black patent shoes typically go with a tuxedo.
5. Shirt- Laydown collar goes with a suit and wing tip collar goes with a tuxedo.
